Walking towards the centre from the Chandlers, you come to the Tourist Information Office which has some fine historical and archaeological displays of the local area. The displays and layouts inside are excellent. If they don’t know something, then they almost certainly know someone who does. During the nesting season, cameras in the Heronry transmit film of nesting Herons to the TV screens inside the office. The office is normally open between Easter and October.

In the centre of the village, there is a good range of shops to satisfy most requirements: outdoor equipment and lapidary, Butchers, Spar shop, Restaurants and a Newsagents (where broadband internet access is available), in that order. Each one carries a range of goods which is fairly typical this far North.
The butchers sells a particularly good Haggis (personally recommended) and also carries fresh vegetables. The Spar shop is a few metres further along and carries most of what you will need including freshly baked bread and rolls, wine etc. There is a garage on the opposite side of the road - you have to ring the bell and someone will come and serve you.
